AgenticOS vs ChatGPT¶
ChatGPT Business and Enterprise give employees OpenAI's assistant, and in 2026 added workspace agents: shared agents built in ChatGPT and run in ChatGPT, Slack, on a schedule or from an API trigger. They are OpenAI's closest match to AgenticOS. The differences are where they run, which models they use and who can reach them.
AgenticOS runs on your infrastructure, uses the model you choose and publishes one agent to eight surfaces. That includes a website widget and an API that returns the answer.
Maintained by the AgenticOS team. Sources checked 25 September 2026. AgenticOS baseline: v0.0.504. ChatGPT scope: OpenAI's pricing, business-data, Help Center and developer pages, not a tested workspace. Workspace agents are a research preview, so check the current state before deciding.
At a glance¶
| Area | ChatGPT Business / Enterprise | AgenticOS |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | OpenAI's cloud; storage residency in ten regions on Enterprise | Your infrastructure |
| Source | Proprietary | Apache-2.0 |
| Models | OpenAI only | 27 providers, OpenAI included, and local models |
| Building agents | Workspace agents, in research preview, with versions and sharing | Published agents with versions, environments and YAML export |
| Surfaces for an agent | ChatGPT, Slack, schedules, an API trigger | Web chat, widget, hosted page, HTTP API, WebSocket, Slack, Telegram, Mattermost, schedules and event triggers |
| API | The trigger returns 202 Accepted, with no run ID and no answer |
POST /agents/{id}/run returns the run and its answer |
| Spend control | Credit pools and overage limits per workspace or group | A budget per agent and per organization, checked before each model request |
| Identity | SSO on Business; SCIM and custom roles on Enterprise | OIDC SSO, LDAP and Kerberos with group mappings, and per-resource grants, in every deployment |
| Audit | Compliance API on Enterprise and Edu, 30-day log window | Tamper-evident audit log, exported as CSV or JSONL, retention you set |
| Pricing | Business $20 per seat per month annually, $25 monthly; Enterprise custom; agent work paid in credits | No licence fee; model usage at your provider's rates |
Where AgenticOS goes further¶
An agent anyone can reach, with an answer that comes back¶
OpenAI's help page says the workspace-agent API trigger "does not return a run ID, and the agent's response cannot currently be retrieved through the API". Its pages list no widget, Telegram or Mattermost surface for an agent.
An AgenticOS agent answers through the HTTP API with the result, streams over a WebSocket, and embeds in your site as a widget. A hosted page is a link for anyone. Slack, Telegram and Mattermost bots run as the linked person who asked.
The model is your decision¶
ChatGPT runs OpenAI models. AgenticOS reaches 27 providers, OpenAI and Azure OpenAI among them, plus Anthropic, Google, Mistral, Bedrock and self-hosted models. When a better or cheaper model ships anywhere, you change one model profile. Nothing is republished.
A budget per agent¶
OpenAI's limits apply to workspaces, groups and users, and OpenAI notes that an overage limit of zero "does not guarantee" the credit balance in real time. In AgenticOS every agent has its own monthly budget, checked before each model request and priced in your provider's currency, not in credits. The cost screen shows each agent's spend.
Enterprise controls in every deployment¶
On ChatGPT, SCIM, custom roles, the Compliance API and data residency are Enterprise-only. AgenticOS ships directory group mappings, six built-in roles with per-resource grants, a tamper-evident audit log and retention per data class in the Apache-2.0 product. Custom roles and SCIM are not there yet. Your data stays wherever you deploy it.
A platform that does not move under you¶
In June 2026 OpenAI announced that Agent Builder, part of AgentKit, will shut down on 30 November 2026. The Evals platform and saved prompt objects end on the same date. A self-hosted platform changes when you upgrade it. The agent spec is versioned and only moves forward, so a spec exported today still loads after an upgrade.
When ChatGPT is enough¶
- You want the assistant, deep research, agent mode and Codex in one seat, with nothing to run.
- Its plugin directory of more than 1,400 apps covers the systems you need.
- You need OpenAI's certifications, key management or Compliance API partners.
- You need SAML or SCIM today, which AgenticOS does not have yet.
Use them together¶
Keep ChatGPT for employees' own work. Use AgenticOS for agents that serve customers, run behind your API or need a budget and an approver. Add an OpenAI model profile and those agents run on the same models under your own controls.
Try one handbook question¶
Build the shared document agent as a workspace agent and as an AgenticOS agent on the same OpenAI model. Call each from a script and check what the call returns. Then put it in front of a visitor without a ChatGPT account. Record the result with the comparison method.
Frequently asked questions¶
Is AgenticOS a self-hosted alternative to ChatGPT Enterprise?¶
For agents your organization owns, yes. It runs on your infrastructure, uses OpenAI or any other provider, and publishes each agent to eight surfaces with its own budget and run history. It does not replace ChatGPT as an assistant for every employee.
Can AgenticOS use OpenAI models?¶
Yes. Add a model profile for OpenAI or Azure OpenAI. You can move an agent to another provider later without republishing it.
How are ChatGPT workspace agents different from AgenticOS agents?¶
Workspace agents run in OpenAI's cloud on OpenAI models, in ChatGPT, Slack, schedules and an API trigger that returns no answer. AgenticOS agents run on your infrastructure, on any model, and answer through an API that returns the result, a widget, a hosted page and chat bots.
What replaces OpenAI's Agent Builder after it shuts down?¶
OpenAI points users to the Agents SDK or ChatGPT workspace agents. AgenticOS is an alternative if you want a builder you host yourself, with a spec format that keeps loading across upgrades.
