AgenticOS vs Copilot Studio

Microsoft Copilot Studio builds agents inside Power Platform. It has Power Platform connectors, Teams and Microsoft 365 publishing, and Purview and Entra governance, all in Microsoft's cloud and billed in Copilot Credits. AgenticOS builds agents on your own infrastructure, with any model provider, and charges no fee of its own: you pay the provider for the model.

If your company lives in Microsoft 365, Copilot Studio is a natural candidate. AgenticOS is the candidate when you want to own the platform, keep the data where you choose and avoid a per-feature meter.

Where AgenticOS goes further

A bill you can predict from the model price

Copilot Studio meters each feature in credits, adds a premium rate for reasoning models, and bills its newer GitHub Copilot harness from the moment you start building. AgenticOS records the model's own cost on each run from a bundled price snapshot. A model too new for the snapshot is recorded as partially priced, and a keyless self-hosted provider records no spend. An agent's budget is checked before each model request, rather than disabling the agent once capacity runs out.

Any cloud, or none

Copilot Studio runs in Microsoft's cloud. Microsoft notes that Anthropic models are outside the EU Data Boundary and off by default in the EU, EFTA and the UK. AgenticOS runs wherever you deploy it. You can choose a provider in the region you need, or run the model yourself so prompts never leave your network.

Every model provider, first class

Copilot Studio's standard harness offers GPT and Claude models, with Azure Foundry for bring-your-own-model, billed separately. AgenticOS treats 27 providers the same. They share one model profile format, the same fallbacks and the same cost recording.

Open where it matters to an auditor

Copilot Studio's governance is strong inside Microsoft's stack. AgenticOS lets you read the controls themselves: the permission catalog, the vault, the audit hash chain and the refusal tests in CI. The spec exports as YAML, so leaving means keeping your agents, not rebuilding them.

Microsoft identity without Microsoft hosting

AgenticOS signs people in with Entra ID over OIDC, maps directory groups to roles, and reads files from SharePoint and OneDrive. You keep Microsoft as the identity and document source, and run the agents yourself.

When Copilot Studio is the better fit

  • Your agents belong in Teams and Microsoft 365 Copilot, and your users already hold Microsoft 365 Copilot licences.
  • You need Power Platform connectors, agent flows, voice or WhatsApp. AgenticOS has no Teams, voice or WhatsApp channel.
  • Purview, Sentinel and Power Platform data policies are how your organization governs everything else.

Try it on one task

Build the shared document agent in both, on comparable models. Run a hundred questions and compare the bill: credits on one side, model cost on the other. Pick a model the price snapshot covers, so the AgenticOS figure is complete. Then check what happens when the limit is reached. Record the result with the comparison method.
