AgenticOS vs OpenAI Codex

OpenAI Codex is a software engineering agent. It spans an open-source CLI, an IDE extension, the ChatGPT desktop app, cloud tasks and GitHub pull request review. It is for developers changing code. AgenticOS is for the agents a whole organization uses, configured by business teams in a browser, governed on the server and published to chat, web and API surfaces.

The two share some ground: an Apache-2.0 licence for the open parts, MCP, sandboxed execution and approval before risky actions. They apply it to different users.

Maintained by the AgenticOS team. Sources checked 25 September 2026. AgenticOS baseline: v0.0.504. Codex scope: OpenAI's Codex documentation at learn.chatgpt.com, its pricing page and the openai/codex repository, not a tested enterprise rollout.

Where AgenticOS goes further

Agents for people outside engineering

Codex cloud features need a ChatGPT plan, and its users are developers. For company agents, OpenAI points to ChatGPT workspace agents instead; see AgenticOS vs ChatGPT. AgenticOS gives a business team the whole path: instructions, capabilities, knowledge, a budget, a published version and eight surfaces.

Rules that hold for everyone at once

Codex enforces sandbox and approval policies on each developer's machine, with a managed requirements.toml for fleets. AgenticOS enforces them once, on the server. Permissions, budgets, approvals and the audit log apply to every run, whichever surface started it.

Any model with every feature

The Codex CLI can use other providers, but its cloud tasks, code review and Slack need a ChatGPT sign-in and OpenAI models. In AgenticOS every provider reaches the same platform: 27 providers, fallbacks, and cost recorded for every run of every agent.

Code execution as a governed capability

Codex runs commands in an OS sandbox on the developer's machine or in a cloud container. AgenticOS gives agents Run Python, a Monty interpreter with no network or filesystem, and a Files & shell workspace in sibling containers. Both are switched on per agent, with limits and an approval setting.

When Codex is the right tool

  • The work is software: parallel cloud tasks, pull request reviews and CLI work in a repository.
  • You want an open-source coding CLI with OS-enforced sandboxing and network off by default.
  • Your developers already have ChatGPT seats.

Use them together

An engineer can use Codex to write, test and review a new capability: typed Python with tests, in a repository whose contributor rules are written down. Once merged, it is available to every agent builder in the organization. An agent spec exports as YAML, so Codex can review an agent change in a pull request too.

Try it on one task

Give both the shared handbook question. Then give the answer to a colleague who does not code, and check what each needs before they can ask their own question. Record the result with the comparison method.

Frequently asked questions

Is AgenticOS an alternative to OpenAI Codex?

No, they solve different problems. Codex is a coding agent for developers. AgenticOS is a platform for governed agents that business teams build and everyone uses.

Is OpenAI Codex open source?

The Codex CLI is Apache-2.0. Codex cloud, code review and the ChatGPT app are proprietary services. AgenticOS is Apache-2.0 as a whole.

Can Codex help extend AgenticOS?

Yes. An engineer can use Codex to write and review a new capability in typed Python. Once merged, it is a switch in every agent builder.

Can AgenticOS agents run code?

Yes. Run Python executes code with no network or filesystem, and Files & shell gives an agent a workspace in isolated containers. Both are switched on per agent.
